Chapter Thirty-Two

Vixx’s hospitality was as extreme as his personality. When he said his people would provide his guests with whatever they might want in the way of food or entertainment, he hadn’t been kidding.

Nakk was familiar with the delicacies of this galaxy, but for Charlie and Bawb everything was still a novelty, and as a result, Nakk took great pleasure in ordering them an assortment of the most amazing foods, the availability of which even he found impressive.

They ate slowly, careful not to overfill their bellies to the point of discomfort as well as give themselves ample room to sample as many of the items spread before them as possible. Bawb showed more restraint, but that was just who he was. Charlie, however, couldn’t help but dig in.

“I am so bringing a to-go container back for the others,” he said as he polished off a plate of Kitzin fritters. “This stuff is delicious.”

“Admittedly, the cuisine is far better than I had expected,” Bawb agreed.

Nakk had taken a break from the culinary part of their hiatus and had headed into the adjoining gaming chamber. “Hey, you should see this,” he called out to his friends.

Charlie and Bawb wiped their hands and pushed back from the table.

“Ooh, I may have overdone it a little,” Charlie said as he stood.

Bawb grinned, amused. “I warned you about overindulging.”

“Yeah, but it was so good.”

He raised a brow but let it go. He’d known Charlie long enough by now to know his weaknesses, and good food was certainly one of them.

They stepped into the gaming room to find Nakk on a platform, waving his arms and running in place.

“What’s he doing?” Charlie asked.

“I have no idea,” Bawb replied.

“Guys, you have to try this,” Nakk called out.

Charlie was more than a little confused. “Try what?”

“Come up here and you’ll see.”

Charlie looked at Bawb and shrugged, then stepped up onto the platform. Immediately, he was surrounded by an immersive, life-like simulation. One set on a tropical jungle planet by the looks of it. Animals scurried by, looking at them then hurrying along. Large, tempting fruits hung from vines within arm’s reach. Charlie raised up his hand to pick one.

“Don’t,” Nakk said. “I learned the hard way. They’re poisonous.”

“But they’re not real.”

“I know, but unless you want to lose a life, you should avoid them.”

Charlie stepped down from the platform. Nothing. Not the slightest trace of the game. He stepped back up and was again right in the middle of the adventure.

“This is wild,” he said. “No headsets required, no visible projectors.”

“It’s run by Allpower,” Nakk said. “I’d heard of these, but I’ve never seen one in person. Only the most wealthy can afford this kind of casting.”

“Well, Vixx most certainly seems to fit that bill,” Charlie noted. “I tell ya, this would be really cool if they could broaden the scale, ya know? Like, make it hangar sized so you could really move in it.”

“I suppose, but it’s wonderful as it is,” Nakk said. “A seamless artificial reality. Incredible.
